DYA Baseball/Softball Season-Canceled

May 25, 2020
Dear Parents, Coaches, and Participants:

As we all know, our country is going through a time of crisis that none of us have ever experienced before. Parents have become teachers to our young children, taking on new roles in their lives, while balancing work and home life.  We understand the need and desire to keep our youth moving and active. DYA wants to be there for all of our youth when we are ready to resume sports activities.  With that being said, we need to inform you that the Dublin Youth Athletics organization has decided to cancel recreational baseball and softball for this summer.

The board members have been meeting for several weeks trying to decide how we should move forward through this pandemic.  Several factors were discussed including:  safety, social distancing, how to get back to a sense of “normalcy”, the possibilities of providing your children an outlet from having to “stay at home” and giving them a chance to play ball with their friends.  It was decided two weeks ago that we would wait to see what guidelines would be provided by the Governor.

After the guidelines from the Governor came out on May 15th, the Program Directors gathered last weekend to discuss whether we felt we could be in compliance with the mandatory guidelines provided by the state.  At the same time, we were receiving feedback from many parents that they didn’t want their child participating this year, which ultimately has affected our availability of volunteer coaches.  It was decided at the board meeting, this past Thursday, that it was not viable to have a recreational baseball/softball season this year primarily due to the following reasons:
1. Inability to follow the guideline that there can be no sharing of equipment: “Must not share water or equipment. Belongings should be used only by the individual owner or operator including, but not limited to water bottles, gloves, bats, hats, and other on- and off-field gear.…”
2. Constraint by a lack of coaches to support the programs.  Some of our coaches have recently decided to not participate for many varied reasons, including being able to conform to the guidelines

We know that this decision may be disappointing to many of you.  However, the DYA board believes this is that best course of action at this time and their decision was difficult and not taken lightly.  One thing that sports does teach us is that we can overcome obstacles and everything will be okay, especially as we live through this pandemic.  The following quote expresses this the best: “Youth sports has been and will continue to be an outstanding platform to develop better athletes and better people through character development.

Let's apply the lessons of youth sports participation; resilience, grit, determination, and selflessness, to name a few, to the current challenge we are all facing in the world today.”
At this time, we would like to address refunds for the fees you have paid to participate in these programs.

DYA is a non-profit organization that depends on many volunteers to run its programs which in turn keeps the costs low to our families.  However, there are overhead costs like any business for which we need to consider and plan.  DYA employs a full-time athletic director, as well as an office administrator to help manage all aspects of the organization. Losing our spring and summer sports, will account for 40-50% of our revenue which has the potential to put a significant deficit in our program funding. We understand the financial strain this pandemic has placed on our community and will offer full refunds for boys’ and girls’ baseball/softball.

While we know it is not possible for everyone, we would like to ask you to consider whether or not you have the ability to donate a portion or the full amount of your fee back to DYA. The donation would go to pay the overhead which has already been used for our spring/summer programs and any additional funds would go towards the DYA Grant Fund.  Families who have been financially impacted by this pandemic will be able to use these funds so their children can enroll in future DYA programs.

If you would like a partial or full refund, please email [email protected] and indicate the amount you want returned and or donated.

We appreciate your support, and together we will work through this crisis and continue to build a strong youth athletic program for our community.
Thank you for your understanding.  We look forward to seeing you next season.
