Announcements are scheduled to appear here at
4:00 pm on Monday through Friday and at 10:00 a.m. on Saturdays when weather
conditions threaten events. Pardon me
if on some days I am late posting. I will do my best to change the page on
time, but sometimes the system is unavailable to accept changes when we need it
and sometimes I can't get to a computer in time. You may also call 777-2222 x RAIN (7246) for the same information,
with the same caveat - the system sometimes is down and unable to accept
changes. DYA's agreement with Dublin Parks and Recreation and the Dublin City Schools provides use of over 30 fields for our programs so long as we cooperate with their call of cancelled ("rained out") activity and do not attempt to play or practice when cancellations have been announced. Please cooperate and do not attempt to remove water, wet dirt, or other field materials from the fields under any conditions. Stay off wet fields. Walking on wet fields leaves footprints that dry hard and create unsafe playing conditions when fields dry out and would otherwise become playable. The best thing you can do to help with rainouts is done on a dry day. After your game is over push some dry dirt into to holes created at the batter's box and in front of the pitcher's plate. Sprinkle some left over water from players' water jugs onto the repaired area. If the hole is filled it cannot collect as much water when it does rain. Five minutes of maintenance may prevent a rainout for the next team. The most frustrating rainout for players and coaches is the one that occurs on a sunny day that dries everything but a big hole. Thank you. Never sweep water onto outfield grass. This practice only serves to deepen the low spots for the next time it rains as well as kill the outfield grass once it dries, creating a larger infield surface to maintain. How to rake a field Everybody knows how to rake a field, but somehow it seems to get done backwards at some fields. One weekend, for example, someone took a shovel to dig a new hole to get dry dirt. Filled in the batter's box nicely, but guess what filled next time it rained.... The object is to fill in a wet spot or low spot. Work (rake loose) some dirt from high areas and brush or pull it back to the hole/low/wet area. Work it into the low area gradually. It will absorb excess wetness and then firm up as the day goes on. High spots are where the dirt is dry (not necessarily obvious). By filling in the hole/low area, it does two things - gives the players a dry area on which to stand and helps reduce the chance of rainout due to puddles the next time is rains. DO NOT pull wet dirt out of a hole. This only serves to make the hole bigger and a bigger problem the next time it rains - around here, that may be tomorrow. BasketballInformation about basketball snow days will appear here during basketball season. As a general rule, whenever school is cancelled or students are sent home early from school, gyms are not available that evening and practices are cancelled. On the weekends if a snow emergency exists in the City, games will be cancelled. Please note that the fact that school may be closed on a Friday and Friday practices are cancelled does not necessarily mean Saturday or Sunday games are cancelled. Please check here first or call the DYA weather line at 777-2222 x 7246 after 8:30 am. Weather Policy for BasketballWhenever weather threatens, as could be the case Saturday, here are the guidelines used to determine whether DYA basketball will be played or cancelled. First, we will check with the Ohio Highway Patrol early in the morning. If there are warnings to stay off the roads, we will cancel. Otherwise, games are on as scheduled. Custodians do a terrific job of clearing the sidewalks, and the City of Dublin does an outstanding job with the streets. Please leave in plenty of time to arrive safely. Also, players please carry your court shoes into the gyms. All persons should wipe their feet dry so as not to track moisture onto the courts. Second, if conditions change during the course of the day and an OHP warning is issued, the web page and the phone lines will be updated. 777-2222 x 7246 (RAIN)
